Mr. Shi Haitao, an artist who has long secluded himself in a corner of Beijing, immersing in creation, his works embody both the transcendental elegance and the earthly passion. His new creations exude a state of pure tranquility after fading away restlessness, without losing the profound ideological contemplation accumulated over the years.Following his large-scale solo exhibition at the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai in 2021, Shi Haitao’s creations have embarked on an innovative and boundary-breaking direction with a rhythmic pace of pauses and reflections. The “Seeking Light” series is built on dim backgrounds, where ubiquitous tangled tree shadows, lines, and brushstrokes interweave. Behind the dappled bright light, ambiguous snowflakes and feathers, countless aspects of the world spanning the past, present, and future are gradually unfolded. This high-contrast fusion of light and shadow in the paintings constitutes the fundamental tone of the “Seeking Light” series, which took the artist three years to complete. Rather than a basic presentation of contemporary easel painting, “Seeking Light” is more like a series of grand stage dramas with dappled light and shadow directed from the depths of the artist’s soul. Opening with the spiritual totem of ancient Greek group sculpture Laocoön, the rooster crowing under the stage spotlight, the dolls in boxes, clowns, red dancing shoes, back windows, shooting stars… make their appearances one by one in the black box. With Intermission as the scene scheduling, and the lonely tables and chairs themed after Waiting for Godot and Doctor Zhivago, it depicts the absurd dramatic life that comes to a sudden realization after the curtain falls. Artistic creation presented through narrative or thematic expression is a comprehensive reflection of the artist’s ideological cognition and an externalization of his spiritual world beyond technical skills. However, the spiritual core of an independent artist can never be expressed through a linear narrative. Such an open-ended expression endows viewers with more possibilities and uncertainties for reflection and appreciation.
常年隐于京城一隅沉潜于创作的艺术家石海涛先生,作品属性中有着出世的逸与入世的狂,新作风格显现出燥火褪却、无上清凉之境,又不失其厚重积淀的思想考量。
石海涛继2021年上海宝龙美术馆大型个展之后的创作,以顿挫与审视的舒缓节奏,步入另辟蹊径、突破象限的创作指向。“寻光”系列作品建构于暗沉的背景中几乎无处不在的缭乱树影、线条、笔触,斑驳高亮的光影、似是而非的雪片和羽毛背后,逐一展现的是横纵过去、现在与未来的万种世间相。这种高对比的画面光影交融,是艺术家石海涛先生历经三年创作“寻光”系列的作品基调。与其说“寻光”是一系列基于架上当代绘画的基本呈现,不如讲是艺术家魂灵深处编导的一出出光影斑驳的舞台大剧。以古希腊群塑內精神图腾的《拉奥孔》开场后,舞台追光灯下的打鸣雄鸡、装在盒子里的人偶、小丑、红舞鞋、后窗、流星在黑匣子里逐一登场,以《幕间休息》为场景调度,以《等待戈多》、《日瓦格医生》为题中题的寂寥桌椅,书写着演出谢幕后幡然醒悟的荒诞戏剧人生。
叙事性抑或主题涵盖下所呈现的艺术创作是艺术家思想认知的综合体现,是技艺之外其精神世界的外化表现。而一个独立艺术家的精神内核绝非一种线性叙述可以表达,此种开放式的表达能够予以观者更多思索与鉴赏的可能性和不确定性。
